Are assignment in this weeks past surface research studio is to Research and Destroy. Meaning we have to take something, destroy it, and recreate a new piece from the remnants, then destroy that, and repeat the process 7 times until you have a finished product to present in a crit. At first I started thinking about tangible things to destroy, gum, flahsdrives, cds, cars, ect. But now I'm trying to think of something intangible I would wanna destroy, self image, verbal communication, perception, and how to go about representing destroying them in a systematic way.
I thought about the idea of destroying a video and the only way to do that is destroy whatever drive or disk that videos on. In a sense it would be about destroying documentation that isn't meant to be destroyed. Pictures and videos are our way of recording something thats meant to be a saved memory but by taking this notion of destruction of what is expected as means of preservation subverts the idea of video as pure documentation and a way to look back and perfectly recount that moment in the past. The idea is to take a picture of a flashdrive and load it to that flashdrive and only on that flashdrive and then take a video of destroying that flashdrive. So the act of destroying become the act of creating as a make a video from the destruction. From there I would take that video and upload it onto a new flashdrive or storage device and proceed to destroy as I once again take a video of that.
